Musings from Mother Jenny 08.02.2024

Question: Does anyone know what they are planning to do with the large three-story brick office buildings on North Fairfax and 2nd Street in North Old Town? I’ve been watching the gradual deconstruction of these buildings for months and am curious.

The process of deconstruction has been fascinating. First to be removed were the exterior bricks and windows, laying bare the offices. Then, floor by floor, interior walls and ceilings were taken down exposing a cavernous space within. Wiring cables and plumbing pipes disappeared. Heavy HVAC equipment was removed. Non-weight bearing beams were detached. What remains, at least in my observations, are the sturdy foundations and supporting beams that hold up the building.

For what purpose, I wonder, are these deconstructed buildings being saved? I won’t be here long enough to see the results, but, clearly, someone has a vested interest in this project. Otherwise, they could have imploded the buildings and walked away.

If you’re still reading and wondering what these musings have to do with Grace Church, I will tell you. For me, it is the image of that sure foundation and the supporting beams providing the possibility for something new to emerge.

But, most importantly, I wonder about what happens next in the internal building up of Grace Church. I think of all the possibilities the future holds for mission and ministry in this place.

What is the sure foundation? Jesus Christ. And, the supporting beams? Why, you! You as the faithful, generous, loving people of Grace Church. And, while I won’t be here to see it, I believe there is a bright and bountiful future ahead for Grace Church.

Gratefully,
Mother Jenny+
