The Work of Adjusting

Dear Friends in Christ—

I was prepared to write to you about our annual meeting, which was scheduled for this Sunday.  But as you have no doubt heard, we’ll be in the midst of a snowstorm this Sunday.

Life is rarely what we plan, is it?

Much as I hate the work of adjusting arrangements and changing logistics, I find myself excited at the prospect of the snow.  It helps that I am a snow lover, of course.  (Anyone for some cross-country skiing?) But it’s more than delight in the magic of snowfall.  I am reminded that sometimes I love it when my world is spun around and stood on its head.

For every last minute traffic jam, there is the serendipitous free afternoon.  For every too-long phone call, there is the surprise moment of connection bumping into an old friend at the grocery store.  For every moment of challenge, there is a moment of grace.

I am not the first to notice that that important work of life happens in the interruptions.  Jesus sets us a model: he was constantly being pulled aside, distracted, and surprised.  Chance encounters are where the miracles tend to happen.

My hope is that you embrace this unexpected time to be a gift.  Church will be morning prayer online, so feel free to come in your pajamas with a mug of coffee.  And then turn your computer off and spend time with the people in your household.  Don’t rush the conversations.  Savor your meals.  Notice the things you often move past too quickly.

Allow yourself to be surprised.  This weekend, and beyond.

Yours in Christ,

Anne
