Father Jon W. Scarffe

Fr. Jon W. Scarffe (pronouns he/him) serves as our Interim Assistant Rector. His primary areas of ministry include pastoral care, discernment, Ignatian & Celtic spirituality, adult education, evangelism, and worship. He has a background in healthcare chaplaincy, with experience in hospital and hospice settings. Additionally, he has worked in prison ministry.

 

Fr. Jon was born in Dublin, Ireland, and grew up there and in the UK. He also lived in Italy, where he taught English and studied Italian language and culture. He studied theology at St. John’s College, Nottingham; Trinity College Dublin; and the Church of Ireland Theological Institute. He earned a Master of Science in Counseling and Psychotherapy from Keele University in the UK. He pursued further studies at The Divinity School of the Pacific.

 

Jon completed four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at Goodwin Hospice and Washington Hospital Center and is currently pursuing board certification. Fr. Jon has held various ministry roles in the UK and Virginia. Jon acts as a Diocesan Discernment Facilitator, guiding Parish Discernment Committees for individuals discerning their ministry calling.

 

He is a former vice chair of the City of Alexandria Committee on HIV/AIDS. He is married to Ron, a U.S. Air Force veteran. They have three adopted cats and recently adopted a puppy. He and Ron serve as fosterers for rescued cats and dogs awaiting their forever homes. Jon enjoys exercising, trying different cuisines, traveling, and meditating.
